Canada’s boreal caribou need your voice.
Boreal caribou living in Alberta and Ontario are staring down a road to extinction – and they need your help to change course.
If these caribou could speak, they would tell us that industrial development and habitat destruction threaten their survival. But since these majestic animals can't, they need our help. Will you call for federal protection for this threatened species?
Boreal caribou are in danger of disappearing from Canada because the provinces have failed to protect their critical habitat. When the forest disappears - altered by logging, mining or oil and gas development - caribou do, too. During the last 20 years, boreal caribou across Canada have declined by 30 per cent. A government report published in October 2017 lists eight out of 12 Alberta herds as in decline. The same report showed that all but one Ontario population is declining. 1
The good news is that when provinces falter, the federal government has the power to step in to protect Canada’s wildlife. Under the Species at Risk Act, the government can extend protections to at-risk species on provincial lands by making a safety net order.
That's where you come in.
