CEPA needs a 21st-century makeover now
Urge the federal government to table reforms - including legal recognition of your right to a healthy environment - to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) by the end of 2020.
CEPA is Canada’s cornerstone environmental law. It keeps us safe from toxic substances and regulates the release of pollution and the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products – a primary source of Canadians’ daily exposure to toxics.
But it’s been nearly 20 years since this law was last updated, and it is showing its age. It is no longer up to the task of protecting Canadians from toxic substances and pollution, especially those in vulnerable situations who have faced the worst impacts of COVID-19.
We need a 21st-century law to keep us, our families, and our communities safe from 21st-century threats.
The federal government has recommitted to modernizing the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), but we need them to act with urgency. As Canada continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadians need to be able to trust that the law adequately protects their health and the environment from toxic pollution.
Call on the federal government to introduce a modernized CEPA that recognizes your right to a healthy environment by the end of 2020.
