Tell Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault to say no to the Terminal 2 (T2) project.

The proposed T2 expansion, located at the mouth of British Columbia’s Fraser River, is a threat to Chinook salmon and the Southern Resident killer whales that rely on them for food. If built, this project will disrupt salmon migration patterns, force young fish into the open ocean before they are strong enough to survive there, and make it even harder for the 74 remaining Southern Resident killer whales to find food.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault has the power – and the responsibility – to protect these species. He can approve T2 despite the risks or he can acknowledge the project will hurt species and the environment and work with Cabinet to protect salmon and whales.

The choice is clear. Urge Minister Guilbeault to step up for Chinook and orcas.

Minister Guilbeault,

I am writing to urge you not to approve the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Expansion Project.

I am very concerned about how this project will impact salmon and orcas – especially Chinook salmon and the endangered Southern Resident killer whales that rely on Chinook for prey.

As a joint review panel found in its final report on the project, T2 would have significant adverse effects on Chinook by disrupting their migration and impacting underwater light and acoustics. The panel also found the project would have significant adverse and cumulative effects on the Southern Residents through habitat loss, an increase in underwater noise, and reduced availability of Chinook salmon, which are the whales’ main source of prey.

As the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, you are responsible for protecting these marine species from harm. That is why I urge you not to approve this project.

Rather, I ask that you acknowledge T2 will have unjustifiable significant adverse environmental effects and work with your fellow Cabinet members to protect Chinook salmon, endangered Southern Resident killer whales, and the other species and habitat this project threatens.

The world is experiencing a biodiversity crisis. But you have an opportunity now to decide to take steps to protect two vulnerable, iconic species. I urge you to make the right choice for Chinook salmon and Southern Resident killer whales.
