Canada needs a climate accountability law now.
We need to make sure Canada never misses another climate target.
The federal government has promised to immediately bring forward a plan to exceed Canada’s 2030 climate goal and to legislate a net-zero by 2050 target.
But federal governments have broken climate promises before. That’s why we need a climate accountability law - and quickly.
Call on the federal government to table a climate accountability law in Parliament by the end of 2020.
Tell them that this law must:
Establish legally-binding climate targets.
Create mechanisms for the public to hold this government, and governments to come, to account for achieving those targets.
Ensure progress is reported on regularly and transparently.
The climate accountability framework proposed by Ecojustice and its partners would establish the systems and infrastructure we’ll need to be prepared to combat climate change and build a safer, healthier future for all Canadians.
We shouldn’t have to choose between fighting COVID-19 and climate change. A safer future requires that we act with urgency and ambition to address both emergencies.
Tell your elected officials: Introduce a climate accountability law by the end of 2020.
